We are seeking a compassionate and reliable caseworker to support people held in immigration detention. This role is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in frontline support work, human rights, and immigration-related advocacy within a supportive and well-supervised environment.

Position:  In-Detention Caseworker (Non-Legal)

Responsible to: In-Detention Coordinator

Location: Bedford office/Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre(IRC)

Hours: 12 hours per week

Salary: £9,085 per annum (£26,500 FTE)

Closing date: 1st November 2026

‍Key Responsibilities

• Making regular telephone calls to people in immigration detention to check in, offer support, and gather relevant information
• Attending and occasionally running a weekly drop-in session in Yarl’s Wood IRC along with volunteers
• Using a three‑way telephone interpretation/translation service when required
• Accurately recording information and updating case records
• Prioritising urgent and safeguarding situations
• Referring to partner organisations or legal representation
• Communicating sensitively and respectfully with people in distressing situations
• Working closely with supervisors and volunteers and following organisational policies and procedures, including confidentiality and safeguarding     requirements

Person Specification

• Strong verbal communication skills and confidence speaking clearly on the telephone
• Comfortable using IT systems (e.g. databases, email, telephone systems)
• High level of emotional resilience and the ability to manage exposure to distressing material
• Reliable, organised, and able to work independently with guidance
• Commitment to treating all people with dignity, respect, and empathy
• An interest in human rights, immigration, or social justice

Practical Details

• Enhanced DBS check required (to be carried out by the organisation)
• Full training and ongoing supervision will be provided

Support and Supervision

You will receive comprehensive training before commencing casework, as well as regular supervision and support. This role involves contact with people in challenging circumstances, and we place a strong emphasis on wellbeing and reflective practice.
